Matt DeBow, Lebanon Express Pictured is the crime scene at COMP-Northwest on Oct. 15. A medical student was murdered at COMP-Northwest, and it was up to students enrolled in the Lebanon Health Career Ladder to determine who committed the crime. The middle to high school students rotated through different stations using a variety of forensic scientific techniques to determine which suspect was guilty of the fake crime. Those techniques including matching dental X-rays, blood typing and liver temperature. The demonstrations were led by community members working in scientific fields, and by first- and second-year med students enrolled at COMP-Northwest. The four suspects were the overachieving student Efrain, a stressed out-student Lexi, the cleaning person Mindy and Professor Johnson. Health Career Ladder student Delilah Baer, 13, said she thought that Professor Johnson was the culprit because he appeared nervous and was studdering when the suspects were introduced. Baer also deduced he was at the right place at the right time to commit the crime. LHCL student Kendal Tessmer, 13, agreed with Baerthat Professor Johnson, or the cleaning lady, may have done it because of the timing, and also that the medical interview for visa professor Johnson’s blood type matched. Kendal said that he learned about different blood types and that if you mix blood types together, you get different results. “If you mix A and A together, it gets all watery,” Kendal said. “If you A and B together, it clots.” Second-year medical student Christina Warner, who organized the event, said they wanted to make the first career ladder day was exciting so that students are interested and return for the following LHCL days each month. Warner added that everyone likes the TV show CSI, and that the first career ladder day is around Halloween so a mystery themed event worked well. “The goal is to get more excited in science, so that maybe they’ll pursue a career in science,” Warner said Kendall and Delilah were correct Professor Johnson was the killer, and he did it because the student was stealing his research. “But I really don’t know that (darkness) plays too much into it. The humor is mostly in the situation. I wouldn’t go so far as calling it dark humor, but it is just really funny.” The show was written byJoseph Kesselring and debuted on Broadway in 1941. Frank Capra directed the film version starring Cary Grant three years later. “This is one of my favorite shows since I was a kid,” Chapa said. “Watching the movie with Cary Grant is one of my favorite things. Its always been a Halloween tradition for me.” The show is at once a Halloween comedy and a modernist satire of theater criticism and theater itself. Mortimer is a theater critic who pans shows before he sees them “to save time” and who has no qualms about skipping the rest of a show after intermission. Theater tropes are satirized in the show as well, especially in a scene in which Mortimer berates a play he saw, unbeknown that the situation he is deriding is happening all around him in real time — and that he is giving his aggressors ideas as he mocks the play he saw.
